18 DAYS IN MYANMAR – CROSS-COUNTRY

Travel from Yangon to Bago, the former capital of the Mon kingdoms from the 14th to the 16th centuries, onwards to Taungoo, the starting point for the visit to an elephant camp in the Bago mountains and then on to Kalaw, a former British colonial town. After a day on Inle Lake, famous for its unique one-leg rowers, typical floating gardens, local methods of fishing and village life out on the water, drive via Pindaya, a charming village with a paper umbrella cottage industry, towards Mandalay, the last royal capital of Burma. From Mandalay via Mount Popa, home of Myanmar’s most powerful ‘nats’ (spirits), to Bagan, where thousands of decaying pagodas rise majestically from the plains to create a timeless spectacle that recalls their glorious past. A full day’s travel brings you to Pyay, the ancient Pyu capital of Sriksetra, a small paradise for archaeologists, and back to Yangon, the ‘Garden City of the East’, with the Shwedagon Pagoda, the most significant pagoda and pride of Myanmar.
